Why is it Important?
The traditional diets of humans was very rich in Omega 3 and much lower in Omega 6 compared to our modern diet. Virtually all processed food is high in Omega 6 since it is made with vegetable oil such as Canola and Soybean oil. In addition, we have chosen to raise our meat livestock on grains which yield very low omega 3 levels and high omega 6. Omega 6 in known as inflammatory and disease causing when out of balance to omega 3 in the body. In addition to lowering Omega 6 intake, we need to seek out adequate daily doses of omega 3 to assist in the ideal ratio.
What are the benefits?
The dry weight of our brain is 70% fat. The majority of these fats are Omega 3 in the form of DHA and EPA. Our nerves and brain tissue need these fats as essential building blocks and insulators in order to function properly and grow. Our joint tissue uses these fats as a form of lubrication to prevent stiffness. In fact, virtually all of our tissues need these fats in some way or another. While DHA is more abundant in the brain and eyes, EPA is more concentrated in the heart and joints. Here are some conditions that Omega 3 fats has been used for: High Blood Pressure, High Cholesterol, Heart Disease, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Lupus, Osteoporosis, Depression, Bipolar disorder, Schizophrenia, ADHD, Cognitive Decline, Skin Disorders, IBS, Macular Degeneration, Menstrual Pain, Colon Cancer, Breast Cancer, Prostate Cancer.
How do I get it?
DHA and EPA are the forms that the body uses and should be focused on when looking for dietary sources. There are many plant sources of Omega 3, such as flax seed, but they are in the form of ALA which needs to be converted by the body. The conversion of ALA has been shown to be highly variable and inefficient amongst studied individuals. Food sources of EPA and DHA include cold water fish, grass fed and finished beef, and pastured egg yolks. This is best accomplished by adding a DHA/EPA supplement to your diet. We recommend our traditional cold-fermented fish liver oil which contains a full spectrum of fat soluble nutrients and around 20-25% omega 3 in the form of DHA and EPA. A vegan source made from algae is also available and contains around 50% omega 3. With the concerns of overfishing and pollution of our oceans it is a great option. Our Algae oil is the only one on the market that contains the fat soluble antioxidant Astaxanthin and is preserved in Miron Violet Glass.
